News:
Beware of Vundo
A very nasty piece of malware (malicious software)
has been making the rounds lately. It masquerades as an anti-virus
or anti-spyware program and uses names like Sysprotect, Storage
Protector, AntiSpywareMaster, WinFixer, AntiVirus 2009, AntiVirus
360, and Virus Doctor. Many of these names are similar to legitimate
programs because they are trying to trick you.
The typical first symptom is an alert saying
that you have some virus or spyware and that you should click to fix
it. Don't fall for this trick; clicking will only install more
viruses.
If you do proceed, they will ask you to pay money for the program
that will fix the problem, but DON'T PAY. It's just extortion, and
it will not fix the problem.
Instead, disconnect your computer from the Internet by unplugging
the cable before it downloads more viruses, then call Bob.
Most anti-virus programs will not detect or block Vundo; it uses
very sophisticated techniques to avoid them. See the
Downloads area
for two free programs that do work against it, but only if you catch
it quickly. |
